Enhanced App Observability Helps Tata Play Broadband Private Limited Achieve 30% Improvement in Issue Resolution
The fiber optics broadband internet service market in India has experienced exponential growth, the broadband subscriber base has grown from 392 million in 2018 to 916 million in 20241. In this highly competitive market, Tata Play Broadband Private Limited, a subsidiary of Tata Play Limited, is among the top providers of a comprehensive pan-India Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband infrastructure at high speed and a dependable network.
To keep pace with the rapidly changing industry standards and meet customer expectations, Tata Play Broadband initiated its digital journey by building its applications on the cloud, becoming an Amazon Web Services (AWS) customer. They ensured that customer-facing workloads, data platforms, visualization, and machine learning operations were built on AWS, embracing an open-source, microservices architecture.
However, as they progressed their transition to the cloud, the IT team at Tata Play Broadband were facing issues with having end-to-end visibility of their application performance and thoroughly monitoring operational bottlenecks. Recognizing the need for a comprehensive observability solution, Tata Play Broadband sought a tool to monitor and manage real-time performance effectively.
“Our journey to the cloud marked a pivotal shift towards innovation and scalability. During this journey, we recognized the complexity of our ecosystem and identified the critical need for a robust observability solution to provide real-time visibility to developers, admins, and operations executives. It was an imperative to ensure seamless monitoring of our business-critical applications to drive efficiency and excellence in our operations,” said Trimbak Rane, GM IT Operations, Tata Play Broadband Private Limited.
Following a successful proof of concept, Tata Play Broadband deployed IBM Instana to monitor business critical applications utilizing microservices architecture on the cloud. IBM Instana empowered Tata Play's DevOps team with visibility into service interactions and instant visualization of dependencies during service downtime, enhancing their ability to deliver high-quality services.
“IBM's Instana offered robust capabilities, ease of deployment and use, quicker decision-making for IT operations and development teams, and transparent pricing. It has made application observability accessible across different teams, aiding in streamlining processes and fostering collaboration. We now have deep contextual insight about the performance of our applications, ensuring they always remain operational,” noted Trimbak Rane.
Since adopting IBM Instana, Tata Play Broadband has seen a 30% improvement in mean time to resolution (MTTR). The real-time monitoring, automatic discovery, and proactive issue resolution capabilities of IBM Instana have proven invaluable for managing different PaaS services on AWS.
Through this deployment, Tata Play Broadband’s digital transformation journey has become multifaceted. It provides real-time monitoring, automatic discovery, and proactive issue resolution for AWS environments, ensuring operational excellence and enhancing agility to be a future-ready organization. This enables the team to focus on other key aspects that require human ingenuity like driving innovation and sustainability initiatives to enhance their position in India's evolving wired broadband/fiber market.
